Forgot this one
Was at Thurrock 18's and managed to get to the FA Youth Cup 3rd round, no side so low down the pyramid had managed it in years and furthest the club had ever got.
We drew Blackburn away and got tonked 8-0, and they missed a pen ! went on to make the final though which made us feel better and think 5 of their 11 are currently playing as pros
The technical ability you gain from playing every day is immense

I remembered I was player manager in a works 6 a side team we put in the Civil Service nationals over at Chiswick… plenty of UK based teams and teams over from Northern Ireland, Scotland etc… anyway we somehow won the comp’ … the cup presented was an absolute beast … about 15 inches by 15 inches and even higher covered in silver and all sorts… with wining teams on their going back to the 1920’s… had a security box that weighed a ton and we had to lump it round London after… as per our visits to Chiswick we stopped off at a shit load of pubs before getting back to the City and finishing in Brown’s in Shoreditch… we had the cup up on stage with various strippers dancing round it… drinking all sorts of shut from it… I think one of us dropped and it got a bit dented… it was only when I got back to work that the head of the sports department came and saw me to congratulate us winning the cup… he told us that the cup was insured for £50,000… and there it was on my dresser at home…. Dented, stained by beer and all sorts… with a strange hint of vaginal slime on it.

Won the WHO 5 a-side tournament 2 times. Probably the highlight of a pretty disappointing career.

Captained Watford District for 3 years (Year 7 to Year 9). Represented Herts County Schools and Sunday Representative side. Played for Witney in Oxford at 17. Career fizzled out. Probably could have played Conference or similar had I stuck at it.
All as a centre midfielder.
Won the WHO 5 a-side tournament 2 times. Probably the highlight of a pretty disappointing career.

Another fella I know well grew up with his family in West Ham, anyway every club was after him but he kept getting trouble with police. He was at Charlton and they loved him that much that Curbishley moved him in with him for a while to try and help him out.
Anyway rumour is he nicked a couple of kettles off him, but he says its bollocks. (Don't know what to beleive to be honest).
But fuck me what a player he was and still is, Curbishley said he was the most gifted player he'd ever seen.
I played against him last year in a charity game, all players over 30 but we're all of a decent standard back in the day but you could not get the ball off this cunt......you could even kick him and he didn't move(not that many would kick him as he's a bit of a naughty fukka)
He and his 3 brothers and 1 sister grew up with their Dad only they had a tough life growing up too the poor fukkas.
Another case of no dedication=no career

A load of us used to play with George Parris when we were kids (he was a mate of my brother). Just kick abouts really.
He was fucking rubbish. Good athlete and strong but never seemed to have a decent touch. Absolutely lovely bloke though and a good family.
Couldn't believe he went pro with west ham and looked a half decent player sometimes.

Mate in question that ripped Tony Adams apart whilst at West ham youth virtually just gave up... he was without doubt the best schoolboy footballer I have ever seen... teams all over the shop were after him including his boy hood team (Liverpool) and this was when they were champs of Europe and prob' the best team in the world... 4 years later he's playing the same standard of football as me on a Sunday...
Think he was aged 23 or so and decided to get over to Florida to do a Soccer course (affiliated to a college/University) took off for him and he broke goal scoring records galore (think they still stand) for the college , was in the US all star team... joined Rochdale for a season (made pro at 28 !!) and won their player of the year...went back to the US and signed up for the MSL with Colorado rapids ... he knows he's been a waster as when he half tried he done all the above... when he was with Rochdale he phoned us up about meeting him and a few of the lads but said he might not be playing as he was injured (hammy)... got over to Col U and he was up against Gus Caesar (ex Arsenal) ... even with a fucked up hammy (always injured) he made him look like an idiot... was a absolute joy to play in the same team as him

Me and a few of my old football mates were talking about ex players not so long ago.
What is interesting is that what we have noticed is that dedication takes you Alot lot further than natural ability.
My close mate at Chelsea with John Terry......He was the bollocks.....Left winger, lightening quick great little player....but he got to 15 and said I don't want to play anymore.
Scott Canham was highly thought of and had dedication and talent to be top player but suffered a serious knee injury and had no luck with him being a CM under Harry with young lampard in his way.
Jo Keith another player that was mustard back in the day played at different levels but could've played at a higher level but liked his life of the pitch if you know what I mean.
Terry May another player that was the bollocks but again outside influences fucked his career up.
Lee hodges another one that should of done better.
Kevin Nicholls had a bit of talent but nowhere near any of the above but worked fucking hard and ended up playing at a decent level.
Then I've got mates 3 in particular that were better than all of the above that got to 16 and just never had the dedication.
So you need a bit of everything including luck to be a top top player. However if your not the most talented it doesn't really matter as long as you are super dedicated.
Trying to install that in my boy at the moment but he seems naturally dedicated so IMO he is already a step in front of me at his age.
